WORKING TOGETHER

Another success story.

Every year we like to invest a little in the future, and one of the ways we choose to do it is to take a final-year student under our wing.

I am happy to say that these relationships have in the past been a very successful and satisfying for all concerned, although we do have to be very careful that we just inform and support, rather than do the student's degree project for them.

2006-7 has been no exception, but the results this year have been pleasantly gratifying.

Of the dozens of students who approached us, we liked the enquiring attitude of one in particular when she spent a day with us on work experience.

Nikki and her tutors at Nottingham Trent asked us to set the brief for her final-year furniture project and this is what we suggested:-

“Design a  themed upholstered piece of furniture appropriate for the proposed 1st Class Lounge at British Airways new Heathrow T5 building.”

Of course, our own proven expertise in this specialist sector was a good starting point for Nikki, who then carried out her own very thorough market research program, interviewing industry specialists and on site research within the CIP (Commercially Important Passenger) demographic.

The design that Nikki came up with features a long uplifting base which hints at the angle of aircraft taking off, with other visual cues from the rakish shapes found in Concorde and other BA planes. The matching (optional) footstool continues the aerodynamic theme and allows the option of an almost fully reclining position for additional comfort in designated quiet areas.

Nikki was a frequent visitor to Piddington, very hands-on at all stages of the prototyping process, and the finished piece was a credit to her.

To obtain an additional critique for the chair, we at Davison Highley presented the final version to British Airways internal and external designers for evaluation and comment.

The chair was so well received by the British Airways designers that they requested a re-sized and developed version for themselves, to be known as “The Captain's Chair”, which has been subsequently ordered in large numbers for the new lounge, alongside the five other Davison Highley designs that have been specified on this project.

Nikki also starred at New Designers and she subsequently graduated with a BA Hons degree.

Davison Highley Ltd have taken up the option with Nikki to manufacture and market the original version, and the design has been registered.

She is going travelling for a year, after which she is coming back to talk to us, and it is clear that her future is looking very bright.

...and the message is?

Working together........ We do it all the time.
